NOVOMATIC mourns the loss of Niki Lauda

The NOVOMATIC Group has been deeply touched by the loss of a unique person. The famous former Formula 1 pilot has been the main ambassador of NOVOMATIC since 2014. Niki Lauda, full name Andreas Nikolaus Lauda, passed away on 20 May in Zurich, Switzerland.

“With a heavy heart, we say goodbye to our respected colleague and friend Niki Lauda. We express our condolences to his family.

We were honoured and pleased to work with Mr Lauda,” said Harald Neumann, CEO of NOVOMATIC.

Niki Lauda was an Austrian Formula 1 pilot and a three-time World Champion – 1975, 1977 and 1984. After finishing his racing career, he worked as a commentator for races on German RTL television. In addition, he was an active aircraft pilot and an owner of the Lauda Air and Niki airline companies.
At the age of nineteen he decided not to follow in his family’s footsteps and started his carrier as a racing car driver. He made his début in Formula 1 in 1971. Gradually, he worked his way up to the Ferrari team, where he won his first title in 1975.

In 1976 he suffered a tragic accident at the Nürburgring race track and miraculously survived. His car flew off the track, crashed into the barriers and ended up in flames. If it have not been for four other drivers who rushed to help, Lauda would have certainly died.

After a series of plastic surgeries and a lengthy recovery, he returned to racing and won the World Champion title twice more. His last race was in 1985. After his racing career, he worked as a racing expert and commentator and started his own business.

In 2014 Niki Lauda started to cooperate with Novomatic and, together with his inseparable red cap with the letter N, he became the ambassador of the Novomatic Group and represented the company at selected Austrian and foreign events.

Niki Lauda passed away on May 20 at the age of seventy. “With deep sadness in our heart, we announce that our beloved Niki died peacefully on Monday. His tireless activities and involvement, his straightforward approach and courage shall remain the model and benchmark for us all. Niki was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. We will miss him greatly,” said the representative of Niki’s family in a statement for the media.

Thank you for everything, Niki.
